Roundabouts

It’s pretty funny (and scary) sometimes to watch people navigate a roundabout.  At the one close to our house,  we have witnessed near wrecks, jumped curbs, cars that have run into walls, and acts of road rage because they seemingly can’t manage the roundabout.  As simple as a roundabout is, there are people who struggle with it which makes the whole roundabout experience just that…an experience!

However, as I was driving around a roundabout recently,  I had another experience worth mentioning.  It wasn’t a crazed driver that didn’t know how to handle the roundabout this time, but as I was driving I realized the place that I was going was someplace that I really didn’t need to be.   It wasn’t a bad place or a bad event, it was just something that I realized I didn’t need to do.  As I got onto the roundabout,  I just kept following the circle around and went back the same way I came.  I did a “180”!

The truth is,  there are many people that need to do a “180” in their life!  Up front, this is not only speaking about spiritual things!  This also could include your finances, your health, and your relationships but even all of those things need to be submitted to God because God cares about all of that in your life!
If your spending is off base, God wants you to do a roundabout and become a good steward of what He has blessed you with!  If you overeat and under-exercise, God wants you to do a roundabout and take care of the “temple” He gave you!  If your relationships are struggling because of your pride, He wants you to do a roundabout, let go of your pride, seek forgiveness and restoration and start afresh with family and friends.

The great news about the need for roundabouts in our life is that God encourages you to use them and He sticks with you all the way around it.
In this process, remember a few things:
  1. God wants you to repent (do a roundabout)! – Job 42:1-6Acts 17:30
  2. God never leaves or forsakes you through this process! – Hebrews 13:5
  3. God is rich in His mercy even when you are going the wrong way!- Ephesians 2:4
  4. God has great thoughts toward you that you won’t experience unless you do a roundabout! – Jeremiah 29:11
  5. God can use you even though your past, recent and far back, can be sketchy…remember David, Saul/Paul, Moses, Abraham, etc…

What about you right now?  Do you need to do a roundabout?  If so, turn back to God.

“Know-It-All”

Don’t you just love being around a “know-it-all”?  Ok, most likely you don’t because for some reason, people that fit that description are hard to be around.  It’s difficult to have a conversation with someone who knows everything about everything and doesn’t mind reminding you about it.  On top of that, we all know that “know-it-alls” really don’t know as much as they think they know, but convincing them of that is nearly impossible.

However, there is one exception…God!  He is a “Jack-of-all-trades and a Master of all of it”.
God knows everything.  His Omniscience is one of His attributes that we can’t deny but many of us wish weren’t true.  Why?  Since He knows all things, there is nothing that we can hide from Him.  Just like last week’s email about His omnipresence and the truth that He is everywhere at all times, including the past, present and future, the same goes for His knowledge…you can’t hide your thoughts or actions from Him.

This is frightening when you think about it because He knows your every thought!  He knows your motivations for what you do and He knows all the plans that you have.  Since God knows every hair on your head (Luke 12:7) there is nothing that we can keep from Him.  His knowledge of everything is perfect.  A.W. Tozier said it well when he wrote, “God knows all that can be known”.
Even though God’s knowledge can be scary, it also can be comforting because God never discovers anything!  He is never blindsided!  He is never caught off guard! He knows your worries and struggles and He knows what can help you overcome them.
David wrote about this in Psalm 139:1-4“O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.  Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.  Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.  For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.”

As I think about God’s greatness through all of His attributes,  my mind goes to where Paul’s was at when he wrote, “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!  For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?  For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen” – Romans 11:33-36
Even though it’s hard to comprehend everything about God’s greatness, I  believe it.  I rest in the fact that my God is so much greater than anyone that has been created and anything that has been made!  He is so high and lifted up even above the heavens yet He thinks good thoughts to me and you!  He knows you, the good, bad and ugly things about you, yet He loves you!  What a God we have and serve!

Let’s keep searching out the attributes of God!  You’ll never be disappointed in Him!

Message From Matt – May 29

You can’t run, can’t hide!

Remember the story of Jonah?  I know…everybody does, but do you remember how the book started?

It starts out with God telling Jonah to go to Nineveh to preach God’s warning of judgment against them, BUT, Jonah had another plan…”But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord…(Jonah 1:3)
If disobeying God was Jonah’s plan, he succeeded!
If getting away from God was the plan, he failed!

The problem is the same problem that everyone else has that tries to run from God; it’s impossible to run from Him…Because He is everywhere at all times!  For those that are running to God that is a blessing!  For those that are running fromGod, this can lead to big problems!

Focusing on the good parts of this truth, it’s good to know a few things!  The first is that God’s omnipresence transcends time itself.  He is in the past, present, and future all at the same time which is far above our comprehension.  The truth is,  since God is currently in all three of those time categories,  He already knows my future!  He already has mapped out His best for me and knows every move that I will make and since He has the best thoughts toward me (Jeremiah 29:11) and cannot lie (Titus 1:2), I know good things await me…especially in spending eternity with Him (Revelations 21-22).

The second part of this truth is that God is never far away.  You can never be too far from God!  He is never too busy or distracted to take His eyes off of you and He is definitely always capable to handle any problem that you have.

Lastly, He is here, there and everywhere.  Normally, that phrase is said in a negative way, but the truth that God is everywhere at all times should give us comfort!  We cannot escape His presence, His mercy, His grace, His chastening when needed, or His love.  Whether you are in Indy, Florida, or China…God is there.  You might try to run from Him, but if you are His child…you can never get rid of Him!  You can never get Him out of your mind!  You can never get Him to forget you!  You can never be so far away that He can’t help you!

Let’s always be running to Him…never trying to run from Him!
