JESUS – Betrayed

Who was Judas?

  • Son of Simon – John 6:71
  • Had power from Jesus to heal the sick and cast out unclean spirits – Matthew 10:1-4
  • In the Greek language, the name for Judas (Ioudas) and the name for the Jews (Ioudaios) are similar which couldlead us to believe that Judas is a symbol for Jewish people who rejected Christ!

Was Judas a child of God?

  • Jesus said that it was good if he wasn’t born –Matthew 26:24, Mark 14:21, and Luke 22:22
  • Satan entered “in” or “into” Judas
    • Then entered Satan into Judassurnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.” – Luke 22:3 (also see John 13:27)
    • “And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heartof Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him:” – John 13:2
  • Question – Can Satan enter into a believer?
  • Jesus said that he lost none, except the son of perdition (Judas) – John 17:12
  • “Jesus answered them, Have I not chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?”John 6:70
  • “For he knew who should betray him;therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.” – John 13:11

Did Jesus grant permission to Judas to betray Him?

  • “…Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.” – John 13:27 (This Means Judascould do nothing to Jesus that He didn’t allow him to do. Just as the devil couldn’t do anything to Job that God didn’t allow Him to do,God set the perimeters)

Judas’ Admission of Guilt

  • Matthew 27:1-4 – “…(4) Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood…”

Betrayed with a Kiss

  • “ And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.” – Matthew 26:49
  • Also see Luke 22:47-48 andMark 14:45
  • What did this type of kiss represent?

The Garden of Gethsemane

  • Gethsemane means, “oil-press”, its the name of an olive-yard at the foot of the Mount of Olives.
  • In the garden, Jesus was ‘pressed” with agony of soul and the presence of satanic attack. Use the Word of God, when attacked by Satan

The betrayal prophesied

  • Compare Zechariah 11:12-13with Matthew 26:14-16 – the price negotiated
  • Compare Exodus 21:32with Philippians 2:7and 1 Peter 2:4about the 30 pieces of silver
    • The One who is priceless was bargained for like cattle! (Like sheep to the slaughter – Is 53:7). Jesus went to the cross as a servant!

Jesus went to the cross willinglyGalatians 1:4

Why serve, give and love? Because He first loved us!  “We love him, because he first loved us.”1 John 4:19
